Meta Muse vs Instinct AI: which to use

Updated .

Meta Muse is a free-to-start app from one of the world's largest companies, with a published price ladder and a growing (if controversial) public track record. Instinct is a 14-person startup's invite-only agent that you reach only by text message or phone call. It has no app and its pricing is not public, and it was reported to be in billion-dollar-plus fundraising talks. If you want something you can sign up for today, that's Muse. If you can get an invite and prefer texting a number over opening an app, that's Instinct.

Underlying modelMeta's own model, internally "Avocado" (Muse Spark), for nearly every session. One independently-exported session showed a subagent task routed server-side to a model tagged azure/muse-special, likely an OpenAI model served via Azure; this is Meta's own infrastructure choice, not a user-facing way to plug in an outside account. sourceInstinct's own proprietary core model, with no model choice. source
Where memory livesYes, named and documented: MEMORY.md plus dated files under memory/ and memory/bank/, inside the user's isolated cloud VM. "You can find out what Muse remembers about you at any time by asking directly, or by viewing files like your MEMORY.md." A named "Forget skill" removes specific topics/people; a full reset deletes all Muse data. sourceOn Instinct's servers. A black-box teardown found git-tracked markdown files searched with grep; Instinct has not confirmed that design. source
Always onYes. "Muse keeps things moving after you close the app. It monitors, follows up, and sends a notification when something needs your attention." sourceYes. "It texts you first when something needs doing" and is described as proactive by early users; works on tasks in the background. source
Own computer / browserYes. Runs in "Muse Secure VM", a dedicated isolated cloud VM per user, with its own browser. A separate "Sentinel" agent is the sole permission authority for network egress and connector actions. sourceYes. "It works on its own computer with your accounts", "trained to use a phone and a computer" the way a person does. source

Who should pick which?

Pick Muse if…

Pick Muse if you want a real app with a documented interface (Ideas tab, Goals tab, named connectors), a published price, and general availability in the US or Canada right now, and you can accept Meta's default data-training setting until you turn it off yourself.

Pick Instinct if…

Pick Instinct only if you can get an invite and specifically want the no-app, text-or-call interface. One direct comparison from a real user who tried both on the same task, ordering bagels and negotiating with a vendor, found Instinct handled negotiation by email while Muse could only call; on that job, the phone call mattered more than the email. Each acted in a different way, and which one wins depends on the task in front of you.

Skip both if…

Both are the wrong fit if you live outside the US and Canada and have no Instinct invite. Muse has not launched in your country, and Instinct has no public sign-up.

What do users say?

“I'm slowly cleaning up the suburbs with Muse. Saw this mess of wires on a pole. Took a picture and asked Muse to contact Verizon to get them cleaned up... 'Someone should do something about that' is now a prompt.”

@toddsaunders, Meta Muse

“This weekend, I used Instinct to order bagels for my son's birthday. When I arrived to pick them up, the store hadn't received the order... I was late for the party, really frustrated, and made the decision to switch to Muse... Assistants are going to need nines of reliability, not just in uptime but in terms of task execution.”

@benspringwater, Meta Muse

“I used to use chat GPT for everything I needed, but I get more done with muse in 30 minutes than I do in 2 hours with chat gpt... My favorite part about it is the NO BS opinions it gives me. Chat gpt will tell me what I want to hear most of the time.”

kingbulltrev, App Store review "Better than gpt", Meta Muse

“It's cute. It's cuddly. And it wants all your data.”

NBC News, Meta Muse

“14 employees - no launch video - no raise announcements - no X profile - basic website - not even an .ai domain - no app - no marketing - founder only posts new f[eatures]”

@asharoraa, Instinct

“My garage door broke. I put Muse & Instinct on it. Surprisingly they both found the same 3 names & quotes. Instinct was able to email & negotiate. Muse couldn't negotiate but made calls which was a game changer”

@atShruti, Instinct

“Using Instinct 20 times every day, and perhaps more. It now manages my calendar, coordinates with my wife's calendar, sends and tracks all emails, is proactive, knows when a follow-up is needed, and flags deadlines.”

@BakarBansal, Instinct

“Instinct has a higher valuation than Snapchat, Match Group, Dropbox, Lyft and Etsy. Make it make sense.”

Common questions

Can I just sign up for Instinct?

As of this research it is invite-only private access; there is no public sign-up. Existing users and investors hand out invite links. Beta access is reported as free, but Instinct publishes no official pricing and its own terms of service reserve the right to charge fees and change pricing at any time, with all payments non-refundable once that happens.

What does Instinct actually cost?

No public price exists. Widely shared figures like "$200 a month" or "$500 a month" are unconfirmed rumors, not official pricing, according to independent coverage that checked directly with Instinct's own site and terms.

Does Muse train on my data by default?

Yes. Meta's own help page states the AI-training setting "is on when you first use Muse," with a toggle under Settings > Data controls to turn it off. Muse conversations are explicitly excluded from ad targeting regardless of that setting.

Which one has been reviewed by more people?

Muse, by a wide margin. It has roughly 98,000 App Store ratings averaging 4.9, extensive press coverage, and documented Hacker News activity. Instinct has no app to review; what exists is press coverage of its funding and a small number of quoted early-tester experiences, not a public review corpus.

Neither one fits? Each agent has its own alternatives page, with every fact linked to its source. Or Mover OS, $49 once. It is the wrong choice if you want something that keeps running while your computer is off.
