Did OpenAI drop ChatGPT's 5x and 20x plan names?

Updated .

Yes, in effect: since 29 September 2026 OpenAI's plan names for ChatGPT Pro are Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500, and its help page ranks their usage against each other without a 5x or 20x figure.

What did the reports say before the launch?

On 27 September 2026 TokenPost reported that OpenAI had renamed the $100 and $200 Pro plans Pro Standard and Pro More on its pricing page and removed the detailed usage lines. A pull request merged into the public openai/codex repository on 25 September had added a plan type called promax with the display name Pro (Max), and renamed the display strings of the existing tiers, according to AIbase. source, source, checked 30 September 2026.

What does OpenAI's help page say now?

OpenAI's own documentation for dots lists the plans as Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500. source, checked 30 September 2026. The outlet Mixed reports that OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes date two changes to 29 September 2026, a new Pro 500 plan at $500 a month and the reopening of Pro 200 to new subscribers at $200 a month with a lower included allowance, and that the help page now lists three plans: Pro 100 at $100, Pro 200 at $200 and Pro 500 at $500. It quotes the page: "Pro 200 includes more usage than Pro 100. Pro 500 offers the highest included usage of the three plans." OpenAI publishes no figure for any allowance on any plan. source, checked 30 September 2026.

The multipliers now come from staff and press comments, and no OpenAI page prints one. The Next Web and Engadget both report that Pro 200's usage in Codex and ChatGPT Work falls from 20 times to 10 times the Plus allowance, and that GPT-6 Pro chat messages fall from 200 to 100 a week. source, source, checked 30 September 2026.

Who keeps the old 20x allowance, and until when?

A Pro 200 subscription that was active at OpenAI's eligibility cutoff, or in the seven days before it, keeps its previous allowance through 29 October 2026, then moves to the lower one at the same $200 a month. OpenAI does not publish the cutoff date. Keeping the old allowance "does not upgrade your plan or add Ultrafast", the help page says, and Ultrafast, the faster GPT-6 Astra tier, comes only with Pro 500 among the Pro plans. source, checked 30 September 2026.

What should you budget by?

Budget by the price and the ranking, since those are what OpenAI states: $100, $200 and $500 a month, each with more included usage than the one below. Treat any multiplier as a press or staff figure until OpenAI prints it. Coverage disagrees on Pro 500 itself: one outlet quotes 25 times Plus from an OpenAI DevDay recap, another says no OpenAI page publishes a multiplier. source, source, checked 30 September 2026.

Common questions

Is there a $500 ChatGPT Pro plan?

Yes. OpenAI launched Pro 500 at $500 a month on 29 September 2026 at DevDay. It is the only Pro plan with Ultrafast, and it was sold through ChatGPT on the web at launch.

Should I move to Pro 500 before 29 October?

That depends on whether you need Ultrafast or the highest allowance. Pro 200 subscribers keep the previous allowance until 29 October 2026 at no extra cost, and OpenAI says keeping it does not add Ultrafast.

Where can I check the official numbers myself?

OpenAI's help article About ChatGPT Pro tiers and its ChatGPT release notes for the plans, and developers.openai.com/codex/pricing for Codex message estimates.
